It is the capital of Namangan Province, in the northern edge of <a href=\"http:\/\/uzbekintour.com\/dir\/fergana-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fergana Valley<\/a> of north-eastern Uzbekistan.<br \/>\nNamangan is about <span class=\"date\">300<\/span> km east of Tashkent, about <span class=\"date\">65<\/span> km west of Andijan, and about <span class=\"date\">75<\/span> km north of Fergana. It is located at <span class=\"date\">40\u00b059\u2032N 71\u00b035\u2032E \/ 40.98\u00b0N 71.58\u00b0E \/ 40.98; 71.58 1561<\/span> feet (<span class=\"date\">476<\/span> meters) above sea level.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<img class=\"alignleft\" style=\"width: 150px;\" src=\"http:\/\/uzbekintour.com\/images\/150px_Namangan_Kanal.gif\" alt=\"Namangan Kanal\" \/>The Qoradaryo and Naryn Rivers join together to form the Syr Darya just outside the southern edge of the city. As the Iranian name of the city suggests, Namangan was originally a settlement of the native Persian population of Central-Asia.<br \/>\nNamangan was known to have been a settlement in the <span class=\"date\">15th<\/span> century and a part of the Khanate of Kokand by the middle of the <span class=\"date\">18th<\/span> century. It takes its name from the local salt mines (<i>in Persian: namak kan<\/i>).<br \/>\n<img class=\"alignright\" style=\"width: 150px;\" src=\"http:\/\/uzbekintour.com\/images\/150px_Namangan.gif\" alt=\"Namangan\" \/><br \/>\nNamangan was a center of Islamic learning, with <span class=\"date\">20<\/span> madrassahs and over <span class=\"date\">600<\/span> mosques.<br \/>\nAfter accession to the Russia in <span class=\"date\">1876<\/span>, cotton production and food processing became the dominant economic activity.<br \/>\nNamangan suffered a destructive earthquake in <span class=\"date\">1926<\/span>.<br \/>\n<img class=\"alignleft\" style=\"width: 150px;\" src=\"http:\/\/uzbekintour.com\/images\/150px_Namangan_Market.gif\" alt=\"Namangan Market\" \/>The language of the people of the Namangan district, is still largely Persian of the Tajik dialect, particularly in the Kasan-sai (Kosonsoy) and Akhsikath districts on the Kasan river.<br \/>\nNamangan can be good place to visit. In the city there are the Mulla Kirgiz Madrassa, the Hodja Amin Mausoleum and the Hazrabi Mavian Mosque.
