It has a population of <span class=\"date\">199,000<\/span> (<span class=\"date\">1999<\/span> census estimate). The Amu Darya river passes west of the town.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<img class=\"alignleft\" style=\"width: 150px;\" src=\"http:\/\/uzbekintour.com\/images\/150px_Nukus_Mizdakhan_Complex.gif\" alt=\"Mizdakhan Complex\" \/>Nukus developed from a small settlement in <span class=\"date\">1932<\/span> into a pleasant, modern Soviet city with broad avenues and big public buildings.<br \/>\nNukus is host to the Nukus Museum of Art (also known as the State Art Museum of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, named after Igor V.
