The city was named by Greeks who came with Alexander the Great.<br \/>\nTermez means in Greek &#8220;hot&#8221; or &#8220;hot place&#8221; (Thermo or Thermos). It is still the hottest point of Uzbekistan. It has a population of <span class=\"date\">140,404<\/span> (<span class=\"date\">1 January 2005<\/span>), and is the capital of the Surxondaryo Province.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<img class=\"alignleft\" style=\"width: 150px;\" src=\"http:\/\/uzbekintour.com\/images\/150px_Termez_Kirk_Kiz_Fortless_Ancient_Ruins.gif\" alt=\"Kirk Kiz Fortless Ancient Ruins\" \/>Its most famous native son is Al-Tirmidhi, born in its suburb Bugh and buried in <span class=\"date\">60<\/span> kilometers north of Termez, on the outskirts of Sherobod. He is locally known as Iso At Termezi or Termez Ota (Father of Termez City).<br \/>\n<img class=\"alignright\" style=\"width: 150px;\" src=\"http:\/\/uzbekintour.com\/images\/150px_Termez_Buddhist_Temple.gif\" alt=\"Buddhist Temple\" \/><br \/>\nAn ancient settlement was discovered near Termez, which was populated in the times of the Greek-Bactrain rule (<span class=\"date\">3rd &#8211; 2nd c. B.C<\/span>). It was center of Buddhism at the period of Kushans (<span class=\"date\">1st-2nd c. C.E.<\/span>) When Arabs came (in the <span class=\"date\">7th-8th c.<\/span>) the city became the center of Islam.<br \/>\n<img class=\"alignleft\" style=\"width: 150px;\" src=\"http:\/\/uzbekintour.com\/images\/150px_Termez_Kokil_Dor_Khanaka_Mavsoleum.gif\" alt=\"Kokil Dor Khanaka Mavsoleum\" \/><br \/>\nSaid Baraka, Amir Temur\u2019s teacher was from old Termiz. Said Baraka was a philosopher, war strategist and religious nobleman.
